Aspen asked me a few days ago if we have any Christmas Traditions in our family. It was a good chance to talk about a few of the things that were traditions in my family growing up and things that have been traditions in our little family.
This was the first year that we have had a special Elf from the North Pole in our home. She came after Thanksgiving when we put our tree up and she's been keeping a close eye on things. She's also been a little sneaky, and a little silly too! Her name is Sparkle, and the kids love to find her first thing every morning. Here are a few pics of some of the places we've found her in so far.
This year, Sparkle helped us out with another fun tradition. This is something we did when I was growing up, but it's the first year our family has done it. On Dec. 5th we put our shoes out by the front door (this is the Kasteler-Hymas version of an old Dutch tradition), inside the shoes the kids put their Christmas lists for Santa along with some treats for the reindeer... they esp like carrots. Sparkle helped us out by taking the lists back to the North Pole while the kiddos were sleeping, and in the morning she brought back a few early Christmas gifts from Santa and filled up the kids shoes. Each person got a new ornament, a new toy, and a treat! Thanks Sparkle!
Another tradition has been getting a new Christmas dress, or church clothes. We usually get these early in the month of Dec so the kiddos can wear them to church all Christmas seaon long. This year sparkle wrapped them up and hid them under the tree for the kids to discover Sunday morning. It's fun to see how the kids grow and change from year to year in their special Christmas clothes.
